A patient referred to ALMC from another hospital/clinic around the area came in yesterday. I helped in moving him to X-Ray. He was partially paralyzed from the neck down as he was clubbed by thugs 5 days earlier. The other hospital where he was at told him to do "physical therapy".
Yes, a partially paralyzed man that had slight sensation in his toes and who had a severely traumatized cervico-thoracic verterbal junction from a beating with clubs was told to essentially "walk it off".
Whew! So we stabilized him and referred him to ortho. No luck as he was given a neck brace and just needs time for his possible spinal lesion to heal. No massive fractures from the x-rays...(keep in mind the quality) but we'll see! Overall though he was referred to have an MRI at Nairobi or Dar es Salaam but he probably could not afford it as its quite spendy to do.
